Building a Future-Ready Workforce: How employer and community partnerships are leading the way

July 21, 2022

As the country continues to bear the economic impact and community partnerships of the past two years, small and medium-sized towns in the Rust Belt like Buffalo face a particularly steep path to economic recovery. For cities looking to build stronger, more resilient economies after a pandemic, talent is everything, but figuring out how to leverage that talent isn’t always easy.

Last year, Buffalo employers and union leaders embarked on a new approach to finding talent: building their own. The idea may seem simple, but it required unprecedented collaboration between leaders from a variety of local organizations, including community groups, nonprofit technology organizations, and talented leaders from the region’s top employers. The result is a community partnerships that is beginning to transform the local talent landscape and can serve as a model for other cities to lead the economic transformation.

During the pandemic, the General Assembly has worked with companies like M&T Bank to bring local governments and businesses together. These programs are built as true partnerships aimed at building resilient communities, local economies, and businesses. Beyond the pandemic, businesses and governments must continue to work together to develop the skills community members need to thrive in the future.
